Fire Safety

An Everpresent Danger that Can Catch Us Unaware.

Fire prevention is essential to living safely at home. You want to be aware of fire dangers  in the different areas of your home: both inside and outside the house.

Fires can be caused by:

1. Smoking

2. Heating

3. Electrical

4. Cooking

5. Storage and use of combustible products

Different areas of your home present different combinations of fire  hazards. Click on a topic below to get our checklists.

Some Fire Safety Tips

Have Smoke Alarms that work

1. Test your alarms once a month - Use a broom handle to gently push the test button

2. Replace batteries once a year or if the alarm 'chirps'

3. Replace older alarms

Other Fire Safety Devices

1. Fire extinguisher - Have one in your home, know how to use it and get it inspected once a year

2. Fire Sprinklers - If possible, have them installed in your home. If you rent, choose apartments that have them installed.

3. Water Heater - Keep it set to 120 degrees fahrenhiet or below. Prevents scalding.

4. Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI's) - Should be installed in your bathroom and kitchen. They prevent electrocution if an appliance comes into contact with water.

What is a GFCI? Ask your electrician. They can install them for you.

Have a home escape plan

1. Know how to get out of every room in your house

2. Keep escape routes clear of clutter

3. Make sure windows open easily

4. Have a phone in your bedroom with emergency numbers taped to it.

5. Keep doors in your house closed to retard fire and smoke

If you have a fire in your home

1. If you are on fire, "stop, drop and roll" to extinguish flames

2. Get out of the house and stay out. Do not return to the house for any reason

3. Have a pre-arranged meeting place for members of your household.

4. Call the Fire Department
